McDonald’s has received approval to open a new 24-hour drive-through restaurant in the Auckland suburb of Ōrākei, following a closely watched hearing and significant local opposition.
An independent panel granted the fast-food giant’s resource consent after a three-day hearing held in May. The new location will be built at 152 Kepa Road, a currently vacant site.
Both Auckland Council and Auckland Transport opposed the proposal. They argued that the site lacks enough space to safely accommodate a drive-through. Officials warned that vehicle queues could spill onto Kepa Road, a route that already faces heavy traffic.
Public opposition was also strong. Out of 381 written submissions received, 331 were against the application. Only 45 supported it, while five were neutral.
Despite these concerns, the panel determined that McDonald’s met the necessary requirements to proceed with its plans.
Construction and operation details have yet to be announced.
