KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Whataburger is moving closer to establishing a presence in East Tennessee. A recent business license application confirms plans for a new restaurant at 1830 Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville.
The City of Knoxville issued the business license on March 19, signaling progress toward the chain’s local debut. This announcement follows earlier news from MWB Restaurants, a franchise owner serving East Tennessee and North Alabama, which listed upcoming Whataburger locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga on its website.
Whataburger, a Texas-based fast-food chain known for its signature burgers and “Fancy Ketchup,” opened its first store in Corpus Christi in 1950. Over the past 75 years, the brand has expanded to more than 1,000 locations across about a dozen states.
Until the Knoxville restaurant opens, local fans craving Whataburger will need to travel. The closest existing location is in Hermitage, Tennessee, nearly 170 miles away. The next nearest store is in Easley, South Carolina, about 175 miles from Knoxville.
