American fast-food giant Wendy’s is set to open its newest UK restaurant in Southampton this July, marking the brand’s latest expansion in the country.
The new branch will occupy the former John Anthony clothing store on Above Bar Street, located between Specsavers and Boots. A bright red banner in the shopfront window confirms the July 2025 opening, generating anticipation among residents eager to try the chain’s famous square-shaped burgers.
Construction of the restaurant began after planning permission was granted in April. The approved plans allow Wendy’s to replace existing retail fixtures with fryers and other commercial kitchen equipment. Additional approvals were also secured to transform the white shopfront into a modern entrance with a dark grey metal frame, red accents, and automatic double-glazed doors.
An electronic sign will be installed in the front window, though it must remain off between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to comply with local regulations. The first-floor tenant, Chinese restaurant Shanghai Bay, will not be impacted by the new development.
Founded in 1969, Wendy’s is known for its fresh, made-to-order burgers, including its signature square patties that extend beyond the bun. The chain also offers a signature dessert known as the “Frosty,” a frozen dairy treat that combines the texture of a milkshake with soft-serve ice cream.
Wendy’s re-entered the UK market in June 2021 with a flagship location in Reading, stating there was “a gap in the category” for fresh, affordable burgers. The Southampton opening will be the second Wendy’s in Hampshire, joining its existing Portsmouth location.
The menu will feature popular items such as the “Breakfast Baconator,” a 704-calorie breakfast sandwich loaded with sausage, egg, cheese, bacon, and a creamy cheese sauce.
Wendy’s continues to expand its presence across the UK, aiming to attract a growing base of customers looking for quality fast food with American roots.
