Del Taco, Jack in The Box Plans to Expand to Dayton Region

by Nick

Two popular fast-food chains, Del Taco and Jack in the Box, are planning to expand into the Dayton region.

Del Taco, a Mexican-inspired chain founded in Yermo, California, in 1964, has identified at least 10 potential locations in the Dayton area. Its sister company, Jack in the Box—a burger chain known for its tacos—has targeted at least 15 sites in the region, according to Dustin Thompson, director of franchise marketing and development.

Choosing The Right Market

Several years ago, both brands completed a detailed market analysis. This study focused on demographic and lifestyle factors that predict high customer interest. Typically, ideal markets have about 10,000 daytime workers, 25,000 cars passing daily, and a population of at least 25,000 people within a two-mile radius. Locations near other fast-food competitors also rank high.

Thompson said, “Dayton’s economy is growing, and there are many opportunities here. Ohio as a whole is a great market for fast food, and Dayton fits that trend.”

Another appealing factor was the easy access Dayton offers to both residents and travelers through its interstate highway system.

Franchise Opportunities

Del Taco and Jack in the Box are currently searching for a franchisee to enter the Dayton market. Both brands require the franchisee to commit to opening three to five stores. They must have at least $500,000 in liquid assets and a net worth of $1.5 million.

Opening a Del Taco costs roughly $1.5 million, while Jack in the Box’s startup costs average $1.92 million. These figures cover everything except real estate.

Once a franchisee is signed, it usually takes 18 to 24 months before a new store opens, Thompson said.

Del Taco’s Fresh Approach

Del Taco already has three Ohio locations—in Marion, Powell, and Whitehall—that opened in the past five years. The brand prides itself on fresh ingredients. For example, all cheese is grated on site, and guacamole and pico de gallo are made fresh daily.

Recently, Del Taco introduced a locker system in some stores. Customers can order online and pick up their food by scanning a QR code to open a locker.

Jack in The Box Operates Around The Clock

Jack in the Box currently has two restaurants in Cincinnati and West Chester Township. Since 2021, the brand has signed 101 development agreements for 464 new restaurants nationwide, according to Thompson.

Customers can expect a wide menu range from breakfast sandwiches and burgers to tacos, wraps, and even egg rolls.

“We operate a 24/7 menu,” Thompson said. “That means we’re often open all day and night, and you can order any item at any time.”

Both chains are poised to bring more dining options to the Dayton area as they seek new franchise partners and locations.
