McDonald’s to Extend Hours at Most U.S. Locations This Summer – Many Restaurants to Stay Open Until Midnight or Later.
McDonald’s is preparing to extend operating hours at many of its locations across the United States beginning this summer. Most restaurants will remain open until midnight or later, the company has confirmed.
A spokesperson told The Independent that the “vast majority” of McDonald’s U.S. outlets will adopt the new extended hours. However, each franchise will determine which menu items will be available during the late-night service. Locations in airports and shopping malls are not expected to participate in these changes.
In a statement to PEOPLE, McDonald’s clarified that “select McDonald’s locations nationwide will be extending their hours this summer,” although the company did not specify how many restaurants will participate or when the rollout will begin. Customers are encouraged to check the McDonald’s app for updated local hours and menu availability.
A Strategic Move Amid Slowing Sales
This announcement comes shortly after McDonald’s released its first-quarter earnings report, which revealed a 3.6% decline in U.S. sales — the biggest dip the fast-food giant has seen since 2020. The report, released on May 1, covered the period from January 1 to March 31. It also noted that the presence of a Leap Day in 2024 may have slightly impacted the numbers.
McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski addressed the results in the report, writing that “consumers today are grappling with uncertainty.” The extension of store hours is seen by some analysts as a response to declining sales and an attempt to capture more late-night business.
Beverage Spin-Off CosMc’s to Shut Down
In related news, McDonald’s announced it will be closing all five locations of CosMc’s, its beverage-focused concept restaurant. Launched as a pilot initiative, CosMc’s was positioned as a more experimental spin-off from the main brand. The company will also discontinue the CosMc’s app later this June.
CosMc’s featured a specialized drink menu with items such as the “French Toast Galaxy Latte,” the “Pistachio Swirl Shaken Espresso,” and an “Island Pick-Me-Up Punch.” Food offerings included breakfast sandwiches, pretzel bites, and soft-serve desserts, along with several standard McDonald’s menu items.
The pilot locations, which operated for less than two years, will be closed on a “rolling basis,” the company said.
