Dairy Queen has brought back two of its popular chicken items as competition heats up in the fast-food industry’s growing chicken category.
The Buffalo Sauced & Tossed Chicken Strip Basket and the Honey BBQ Sauced & Tossed Chicken Strip Basket have returned to participating locations nationwide. Each basket includes four chicken strips, crispy fries, Texas toast, and a dipping sauce.
The limited-time offerings tap into the ongoing trend of chicken-centered menu items dominating fast-food chains. With rivals like McDonald’s , Chick-fil-A, and KFC investing heavily in chicken tenders and sandwiches, Dairy Queen’s latest move positions it squarely in the midst of what some are calling the “chicken wars.”
Fans have taken to social media to praise the returning items. One Instagram user wrote, “Had my Dairy Queen fill this week—sauced and tossed honey BBQ tenders basket with a side of onion rings—my favorite basket.”
The return of the chicken baskets follows McDonald’s recent rollout of chicken strips across its U.S. locations. But the competition doesn’t end there.
KFC launched a major campaign last year to promote its own chicken tenders, even going so far as to visit Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane’s restaurants in Louisiana and Georgia to hand out samples. “We have the world’s best-tasting fried chicken tenders, so I felt that we should kick off a fight,” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, president of KFC U.S., at the time.
Dairy Queen responded to customer demand in reviving the Sauced & Tossed baskets, which officially returned to menus on March 31 after being requested by DQ Rewards members.
In addition to the chicken items, the chain is gearing up to celebrate National Hamburger Day. From May 26 through June 1, Dairy Queen will offer its Signature Stackburger for just $0.99 to members of its DQ Rewards program. The deal will be available via the mobile app at participating locations nationwide.
With fresh competition and fan enthusiasm driving its latest promotions, Dairy Queen is betting big on bold flavors and value deals to stay at the forefront of the fast-food game.
