JONESBORO, Ark. — Whataburger is planning to open its first restaurant in northeast Arkansas as part of the Southern Hills development in south Jonesboro, according to a release from Coldwell Banker Village Communities.
The Texas-based fast-food chain is joining other new businesses in the growing commercial area near Harrisburg Road and Parker Road. No specific opening date has been announced, but Coldwell Banker Village Communities mentioned that more tenants will be revealed in the coming months.
Southern Hills, located between Interstate 555 and Mt. Carmel Road, is designed to offer a mix of dining options and everyday services. The development is part of a broader wave of commercial growth in south Jonesboro, an area seeing increased residential and retail activity.
Founded in 1950 in Corpus Christi, Texas, Whataburger is famous for its made-to-order burgers, 24-hour service, and iconic orange-and-white striped roofs. With over 950 locations across 14 states, the chain is especially popular in the South and Southwest. Its menu features burgers, chicken sandwiches, breakfast items, and specialty drinks.
Whataburger has been expanding beyond its Texas roots in recent years. In 2009, the company moved its headquarters to San Antonio, and in 2019, it was majority-acquired by the Chicago-based investment firm BDT Capital Partners, which has helped fuel its expansion efforts.
