A US-based fast food chain is set to open its newest UK restaurant at Merry Hill shopping centre today, marking a major addition to the area’s dining options. To celebrate the launch, the chain will give away free food to visitors.
Slim Chickens, known for its Southern-inspired fried chicken, announced in February plans to open 16 new UK locations in 2025. The West Midlands was rumored to be one of the key regions targeted for expansion.
The brand first entered the UK market seven years ago after launching in Arkansas in 2003. It now operates more than 65 restaurants across the country.
Slim Chickens is best known for its hand-breaded, buttermilk-marinated chicken tenders and crispy wings. The menu also includes fresh salads, wraps, and sides such as fried pickles and Texas toast. Some customers have even called it “better than KFC.”
The new Merry Hill restaurant will span two floors and is located in the Eat Central section of the mall, directly opposite Nando’s. It is scheduled to open its doors at noon on Thursday, May 15.
To mark the grand opening, Slim Chickens will hand out thousands of free items, including the chance to win free chicken for a year. On launch day, 5,000 golden tickets will be distributed to guests, each guaranteeing a prize. The first 30 diners will receive three free chicken tenders, with exclusive merchandise also available.
Jonathan Poole, centre manager at Merry Hill, said, “We’re excited to welcome Slim Chickens to our leisure quarter as we continue to transform our offerings across the centre. This area is now the busiest entrance, making it a key part of our ongoing development.”
He added, “Slim Chickens is a popular international brand that will surely be a hit with our visitors, especially with the exciting prizes at the grand opening.”
Poole also highlighted the positive impact on local employment, saying, “It’s a big year for Merry Hill’s expansion, and we’re proud to broaden our food options with such a fan favorite. We’re also pleased to support the 50 new jobs Slim Chickens will bring to the area.”
