June 2025 – Fast-casual burger chain Five Guys is bringing back a long-missed favorite just in time for the summer: the coffee milkshake. The menu item returns after a four-year absence, marking a highly anticipated comeback for fans of the brand’s custom shake offerings.
Known for its straightforward menu of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and fries, Five Guys keeps things simple—and that’s part of its appeal. The chain offers just four variations in each main food category, but its milkshake lineup offers more flexibility. With 10 available mix-ins—including strawberries, bananas, Reese’s cups, and even bacon—customers can create over a thousand milkshake combinations.
In late 2024, Five Guys introduced its first-ever holiday shake, the Candy Cane Crunch, showing that even a conservative menu can surprise fans with a seasonal twist. Still, many customers continued requesting the return of a discontinued flavor: coffee.
Now, those requests have paid off.
Coffee Milkshake Returns with a New Twist
Five Guys has officially reinstated its coffee mix-in, last available in 2021. Originally made with freshly brewed coffee, the shake was quietly removed from menus, with some fans speculating that the brewing process was too time-consuming for the fast-paced restaurant environment.
One Reddit user commented, “It might be because of the time and effort it takes to brew coffee. Five Guys is really focused on boosting efficiency right now.”
To meet demand without compromising on service speed, the company has reintroduced the coffee shake with a new formulation. Instead of brewed coffee, the shake now features a “premium coffee syrup,” according to a Five Guys press release. The change is designed to streamline preparation while still delivering a bold, authentic flavor.
And yes, it still contains caffeine—12 milligrams per serving, according to an Instagram comment from the chain.
A Seasonal Offering
Five Guys has dubbed the returning flavor the “shake of the summer.” But fans should act fast—the coffee milkshake will only be available for a limited time. It’s currently on menus nationwide and will remain until September 30.
Customers are encouraged to personalize the shake by combining it with other mix-ins. When the brand announced the flavor’s return on Instagram, fans immediately began suggesting add-ons like chocolate and caramel for an even richer treat.
