KFC Japan adds a refreshing twist to its summer menu with bold local flavors.
KFC Japan is once again showcasing its flair for combining global fast food with local flavors. This summer, the popular fried chicken chain is introducing the Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger, a new seasonal item that blends traditional Japanese ingredients with the brand’s signature chicken.
The burger features a crispy chicken cutlet, known in Japan as katsu, seasoned and coated in teriyaki sauce. It’s served on whole-wheat buns and topped with shredded cabbage — a typical accompaniment for katsu in Japanese cuisine. But what truly sets this burger apart is its citrus-spiced mayonnaise sauce, infused with yuzu juice and shichimi seasoning.
What Is Yuzu Shichimi?
Yuzu is a fragrant Japanese citrus fruit, known for its sharp, tart flavor that sits somewhere between a lemon and lime. It’s often used to enhance sauces, dressings, and marinades across Japan. Shichimi, also known as shichimi togarashi, is a traditional seven-spice chili blend that usually includes orange peel, chili pepper, sesame seeds, and other spices. Together, the two ingredients bring a unique mix of heat and citrus to the sandwich.
The term wafu means “Japanese-style,” a nod to the use of Japanese sauces and seasonings. Combined, the Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger is a true fusion of east and west, using Kentucky-style fried chicken techniques with unmistakably Japanese flavors.
Prices and Options
The new burger is available in several meal options:
- A la carte: 490 yen (approximately $3.40 USD)
- Combo meal (with medium drink and small fries): 900 yen
- Full set meal (with medium drink, fries, and a piece of Original Recipe chicken): 1,200 yen
Lunch sets, available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offer a 160 yen discount on combo meals.
For those who prefer a simpler taste, KFC Japan is also offering a Regular Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger, made with classic mayonnaise instead of the citrus-spiced version. All pricing options for this version are 50 yen less than those of the Yuzu Shichimi version.
Limited-Time Offer Across Japan
Both burgers hit KFC locations across Japan on June 4 and will be available for a limited time. The chain has not announced an end date, so fans are encouraged to try the new flavors while supplies last.
KFC Japan frequently introduces Japan-exclusive menu items, often blending global fast food with locally loved flavors. From past releases featuring miso and soy-based sauces to rice buns and wasabi toppings, the brand continues to adapt its offerings for the Japanese market.
With the launch of the Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger, KFC Japan aims to deliver a refreshing, spicy, and satisfying summer meal, staying true to both its American origins and its adopted home in Japan.
