In-N-Out Burger, the well-known fast-food chain based in Irvine, California, revealed plans for significant menu updates on May 15. The company aims to phase out synthetic food dyes from several of its products in the coming months.
A spokesperson told KTLA, “As part of our ongoing commitment to providing our customers with the highest-quality ingredients, we have removed artificial coloring from our Strawberry Shakes and Signature Pink Lemonade. We’re also transitioning to an upgraded ketchup made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.”
This move follows the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announcement in April 2025, which outlined plans to gradually eliminate all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the U.S. food supply.
The FDA is working closely with the food industry to begin phasing out certain dyes, including Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B, within the next few months. Other dyes such as FD&C Green No. 3, Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1, and Blue No. 2 are expected to be removed by the end of 2026. Additionally, the FDA urges companies to phase out FD&C Red No. 3 sooner than the previously set deadline of 2027-2028.
FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary emphasized the health concerns behind this decision: “We have a new epidemic of childhood diabetes, obesity, depression, and ADHD. Given the growing concerns about petroleum-based food dyes, we must take every step to protect children’s health.”
The FDA is also fast-tracking approval of natural dye alternatives. On May 12, three natural options — Galdieria blue, butterfly pea flower extract, and calcium phosphate — received official approval for use in food products.
In-N-Out’s updated menu reflects this shift toward safer, more natural ingredients as part of a broader effort to improve food quality and protect consumers.
